Empowering Students Through the Joy of Music and the Arts

GWEN WAHMAN

Piano

Ms. Wahman has performed, recorded and studied with some of the most respected and influential figures in jazz and classical music. She has performed and/or recorded with Jazz notables Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, Frank Gant and Benjamin Brown among others and in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Aaron Davis Hall, many NYC Jazz clubs, Tavern on the Green and internationally. An accomplished pianist, composer, arranger, and band leader she is known for breathing new life into beloved songs through her unique arrangements, original compositions and deep swing feel – earning Mike Longo’s affectionate tribute, “she will swing you into bad health.”

With over 30 years of performing and teaching experience in New York City, Florida, and abroad, Ms. Wahman brings world-class artistry and heartfelt enthusiasm to every lesson—whether for beginners, intermediate students, or advanced players. Her greatest loves are still music and fostering the talent of others through its study. Parents and students often note that she inspires a genuine love of music, tailoring each lesson to the individual and nurturing their personal best while making learning joyful. Her approach draws on Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences, honoring the unique ways people learn and express creativity, and is guided by a humble posture of learning that promotes collaboration, fellowship and unity.

Born and raised in NYC, she studied 25 years with Dizzy Gillespie’s pianist and musical director Mike Longo, 5 years with jazz legend Ron Carter, decades of apprenticeship with Jazz notables on the bandstand as well as Pulitzer Prize winning classical composer David Del Tredici and refined her classical technique with Juilliard faculty member Donald Vega. Her rich training that includes being a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes and City College, allows her to present premier techniques and profound musical concepts clearly for the student of any level and age. Her lessons balance solid technique with creativity, helping each student find their unique voice while building confidence and musical fluency.

Her teaching also incorporates largely unknown rhythmic concepts passed down by Dizzy Gillepsie’s pianist that are the missing link in most of jazz education today – powerful ideas that strengthen timing, swing and melodic flow in both jazz and classical playing. Students find her lessons inspiring, energizing and transformative, often discovering new joy and confidence in their music-making with one remarking “Dad I learned more in my first lesson with Ms. Wahman than I did in the last two years with my last piano teacher.”

Whether you’re a beginner, a returning player or seasoned player, Ms. Gwen’s passion and proven expertise make learning music a joyful, empowering journey. She looks forward to meeting you and helping you or your child reach the musical heights to which your souls aspire!
