MARCOS TOLEDO
Guitar, Piano
Born in Guadalajara, México, internationally acclaimed jazz guitarist Marcos Toledo discovered his love for music at age seven. Initially playing piano, he studied with renowned pianists José Sobrino and Alfredo Vázquez (a student of the great late Manuel M. Ponce). At thirteen he started playing the guitar, which would become his main instrument. After relocating to Mexico City in 2011, he attended the prestigious college Escuela Superior de Música del INBA under the direction of jazz guitarist Eduardo Piastro, and at Guitart with jazz master Alberto Medina. In 2014 the composer began to study with some of the world’s finest jazz musicians such as master drummer Michael Carvin, legendary guitar player Ed Cherry, the great guitarist Peter Bernstein, and the extraordinary guitarist Lage Lund, to name a few. Since 2017 Toledo has released five critically acclaimed albums as a leader and as a sideman, being his most recent release ̈The Gift ̈ (2024).
From 2018 to 2020 Marcos worked as the guitar, harmony, ear-training, improvisation and ensemble teacher at the High Performance Program by Instituto de Jazz Tónica, a program aiming to prepare young musicians for college auditions. After obtaining the O1 Artist Visa he officially moved to New York City in 2022, where he has been performing and preparing an upcoming album with his band. He also taught at Opus Ethica Music School in Queens. Other notable collaborations include works with the Jonathan Barocio Quartet, Mónica Zuloaga Quartet, Toledo-Triay Quartet, among others.
“The technical proficiency of each band member is absolutely astonishing, yet what’s absolutely miraculous is the sum of all the parts. You can immediately tell that each musician is seasoned and skilled. Together they strike an electric chemistry that is magnificent to listen to.” -JAZZ CORNER
