KRISTIAN SAARUP (Copenhagen, Denmark) is a dynamic and accomplished drummer, educator and arts administrator based in New York City. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen and recently earned a certificate in Culturally Responsive Music Instruction from the National Association for Music Education. He served for three years as Percussion Instructor at the Furesø Municipal Music School. 

As a drummer, Kristian’s work spans jazz, experimental, and indie music scenes. His debut album was nominated for Best New Jazz Album at the 2020 National Danish Music Awards, and he has over 15 original releases to his name, including two full-length albums on the acclaimed experimental label Barefoot Records. Kristian has collaborated with a wide range of artists including Nordic Council Music Prize-winner Lotte Anker, Cannes-nominated composer Martin Escalante, and Pitchfork-featured indie-band GOON. Upcoming releases include projects with Pew Center fellow Sandy Ewen and Pioneer Works artist-in-residence Michael Foster. 

Over the past six years, Kristian has worked at the intersection of music education and social innovation, most recently as a Program Manager with the LA Phil and its internationally recognized youth orchestra program in South Central Los Angeles. Prior to that, he founded and directed ArtistaDentro, an arts nonprofit based in Nezahualcóyotl, Mexico City – the organization continues to thrive, and its signature arts program now has over 1,050 graduates and counting.
