Coming from diverse musical backgrounds ranging from math-rock, jazz and avant-garde improv, Latvian composer, guitar player, songwriter, arranger and educator Matīss Čudars keeps following his insatiable creative drive, transcending genres and aesthetics. His motherland having a strong tradition in folk and choral musics, Matīss’ work always strives for melodicism and beauty often inspired by Latvia’s sublime yet modest nature.
With a bachelor’s degree in Jazz Guitar from the Amsterdam Conservatory and a master’s degree in Composition from the Yale School of Music, Matīss currently calls New York City his home.
In 2023, Matīss earned the Latvian Grand Music Award for his notable concert, a reflection of his significant contributions to the musical landscape. His achievements also include victories in respected competitions like the Burghausen Jazz Award, Keep An Eye Jazz Award, and Riga Jazz Stage, showcasing his versatility as a guitarist, band leader, and composer across diverse musical genres.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, Matīss shares his passion for music education. He has imparted his knowledge at institutions such as Yale University, Amsterdam Conservatory, and Emilis Melngailis Liepāja Music College, teaching guitar, improvisation, and composition to students of varying ages and skill levels. Recently Matīss has settled in New York City, where he is pursuing his dream of working with his favorite musicians and artists across disciplines, as a guitarist, composer and improviser.
